People try to box others in. Genres and artist comparisons are how the public tries to make sense of a musician. You can’t really do that with Matt Bednarsky.

Born to a mother with a classical pedigree and a professional jazz guitarist father, Matt grew up in Shelton, CT engulfed in music. He began violin at the age of 4 (soon after left behind), guitar at age 8, and started singing probably not long after he could make farm animal noises. He first put pen to paper in songwriting at the age of 12, finding it as a way to creatively engage.

Matt attended New York University and studied Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, psychology and music. After studying abroad in It...

Kray Van Kirk is an Alaskan singer-songwriter, delivering performances that the Borderline Folk Club in New York called "...what every singer-songwriter should aspire to." At the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where many shows receive only a handful of audience members due to the sheer volume of available performances, his room was sold out, leaving some folks sitting on the stairs and a Fringe reviewer to write "the Alaskan singer-songwriter, in his Edinburgh debut, was not the reason I arrived early, but certainly why I stayed late".

Kray walked away from his first stint in graduate school in Berkeley to tour and live in his Ford Econoline van, playing shows in the days before cell phones (...

Thousands of miles and hundreds of shows later, they've toured coast to coast in the US, played to packed rooms across Europe, sold-out the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, have taken the stage at major festivals like the Kerrville Folk Festival in TX, and were named CIYH Artists of the Year in 2014.

Frequently Tours: East Coast, Midwest, Southeast, Europe Style: Varied
# of Members: 2 Content: Mainstream
Sound Equipment: Available if needed Rating: G - PG
Main Instrument: Vocals, Guitar / Piano Other Instruments: Harmonica, percussion

Genna & Jesse are defined by a unique alchemy born of the quirky chemistry, intricate vocal harmony and ardent storytelling which infuse their songwriting and vibrant performances. With whispers (and sometimes roars) of folk, blue-eyed soul, jazz, blues, torch song, and ‘60s and ‘70s pop music, their self-chosen genre “Retro Soul Pop” doesn’t entirely encompass their joyful live shows and sensual, deliberate albums. They shrug off music industry conventions in favor of what feels good, and this genre-defying dedication to being current and free has an exciting and irresistible effect. Drawing inspiration from their nomadic lifestyle, Genna & Jesse are best described as modern troubadours, generously o...

For the past two and a half years, Craig Cardiff has been passing around a Book of Truths during his shows and asking his fans to share something truthful in it — a story, a confession, a hope, a secret. The book gives fans a chance to write down something they might be too afraid to say out loud, and it gives Cardiff an opportunity to connect with the people who come to his shows.

Those entries aren’t always easy to read. The stories can be heartbreaking, and they can leave Cardiff wanting to do something, to find the person who wrote in his book and tell them to hold on for tomorrow, that things will be OK.

Cardiff’s new album, Love Is Louder (Than All This Noise) Part 1 & 2, has turned int...

In an episode of the Fox TV drama Bones, a character made a mix of “the six greatest break-up songs” and gave it to a heart-broken colleague. The mix featured songs from alternative-pop stars such as Sia, Mazzy Star, José González, Antony and the Johnsons…and a lone unsigned artist by the name of Aaron English.

In 2008, with two self-released albums and into their third national tour of the US, the Aaron English Band's bus was involved in a catastrophic accident on a Midwestern highway. His restaurant-grease-fueled tour bus and most of his musical equipment were destroyed, and English’s touring career was temporarily grounded.

By the summer of 2009, however, his fans rallied to h...
